Step 1 : Study in New Zealand

One of the easiest ways to enter New Zealand , enjoy a few years of stay , get to know New Zealand culture, economy and ways of life before you make a decision to stay on and live is to come on a Study Visa.

Undergraduate studies in New Zealand would be a minimum of 2 years to 3 or 4 years depending on the course you choose. A Graduate or post graduate program would be 1 to 2 years depending on the course you choose. Post graduate students may be able to bring their Partner/spouse on a Partnership based Work Visa if they qualify.

Once you have completed your studies, you may be able to stay on and work in New Zealand for a while to gain work experience depending on the visa you hold. You may even consider staying in New Zealand permanently.

New Zealand’s Immigration policies include a post-study work pathway for international students who have completed a New Zealand qualification. This pathway enables students to find a job and get overseas work experience in a field directly related to their studies. Based on the industry and the level of their skills this pathway makes it easier for them to apply for residence under the Skilled Migrant Category.

Step 2:Work in New Zealand – Post Study Work Visas

There are two types of work visa specifically for students who have completed their tertiary study in New Zealand:

  • The Post-study work visa (open): This gives you up to 12 months to find a job that is relevant to your studies
  • The Post-study work visa (employer assisted): This option lets you work in a specific job, which must be relevant to your studies, for two more years. Example: student completing a Cookery course needs to seek employment as a Chef or a student completing an IT course needs to seek employment as a IT technician or software programmer depending on what he has majored in or studied. ( Note: the job has to be relevant to the qualification gained in New Zealand recently and not a previous qualification in new zealand or overseas)

If you want to stay in New Zealand for longer you’ll need to find a job that is relevant to the qualification you achieved here.

If you are looking for work in New Zealand we recommend  Seek, TradeMe and New Kiwis are popular job search sites. You should also check out the Careers New Zealand website which has a list of online recruitment sites.

We will assist you with re-structuring your resume to suit New Zealand standards and what employers expect. We will also assist you with Interview preparation and scoping out potential jobs. This is a paid service.

Step 3: Settle and Live in New Zealand

Once you have a job in your field and the employer is willing to support you, you may want to settle in New Zealand. You can apply for Permanent residence in New Zealand under the Skilled Migrant category.

As Licensed Immigration Adviser for New Zealand, we will advice and assist you throughout the Study-Work-Settle pathway and help you make New Zealand your new home!
